August 13th, 2011

To whom it may concern,

I made the mistake of having someone else install my home entertainment center but was lucky enough to find Digitainment.

I have used Digitainment to update products and functions, balance my surround sound, adjust for best picture and boost my internet signal.

Service technicians are prompt and knowledgeable; I recommend Digitainment to everyone!

Best regards,

Tom

Our Process Comparisons
Comparison Shopping PDF Print E-mail

In our business it's a little hard to separate the equipment sales from the installation labor because each is really useless without the other. It's long been a favorite of AV companies to use equipment as the "loss leader" and make up for it in the installation labor or hidden charges like shipping, extended warranties or other required items like cables and wire. Another tactic is to lump the details of an installation into a few lines like "AUDIO VIDEO EQUIPMENT" and "INSTALLATION LABOR" so you can't see the breakdown and make comparisons. We take a different approach..

Lowest Overall Price...Guaranteed!

Digitainment GUARANTEES to have the LOWEST PRICE of any authorized reseller that's a licensed contractor (California licensed C-7 Low Voltage Contractor).  You get a quote for less, send it to us we'll beat it.  In all my years, only once has someone beat us and they were a cousin of the customer.

Usually when companies claim to beat us, it's because they are not bidding apple-to apples.  let us review it and show you what they are leaving out!

Our Warranty

Any Digitainment customer that buys their equipment and pays to have Digitainment install that equipment and pays their balance in full, receives a limited lifetime customer service labor warranty, under normal use, for as long as they own the residence.  Replacement equipment that is purchased from Digitainment will be reinstalled at no additional labor cost other than special remote control programming.

For example, all Preference speakers Digitainment sells carry a manufacturer’s limited lifetime warranty, so if they fail under normal use, the manufacturer would replace the speakers free of charge and Digitainment would remove and reinstall the new speakers no charge.

If a customer has a problem with a TV Digitainment sold and installed that is under warranty, we will handle the warranty issue for the customer and take down TV and send in for repair and re-hang afterward.  If it fails after the warranty, (2 years typically on Panasonic ) Digitainment will remove and reinstall another TV purchased through Digitainment with no labor charge.

If a customer has a problem with a piece of equipment we sold and installed, we will try to resolve by phone.  If working together, the issue cannot be resolved by phone, we will schedule a “free” customer service call with one of our technicians to resolve the issue.  Customer service times are determined by Digitainment and are prioritized based on the nature of the issue.

Most issues involve cleaning personnel knocking off emitters on devices and we will cover this cost the first time, but after that you may be charged.

The second most common issue is cable box or satellite related, and those can usually be determined over the phone.

Most issues are handled within 2-3 business days.

We are a referral business and a system that doesn’t work, doesn’t generate referrals!

Investigate Your Installer

To protect yourself and your investment ensure:

  • California state licensed low voltage contractor (C-7) in good standing
  • $10,000 Bond on record to protect you (they should be able to provide you with a card proving both)
  • Liability insurance at least $2M
  • Worker's compensation insurance for their employees

Nice to haves:

  • BBB Member in good standing (Better Business Bureau)
  • CEDIA member (Consumer Electronic Distributor Installer Association)
  • ASID Industry Partner (American Society of Interior Designers)

You should ask for proof of these with your quote. When they never get back to you, you'll know why!

Types of Installation Companies

In our business, it seems that everyone knows someone who does home AV installation. Most installers fall into 3 categories:

  1. The HIGH END INSTALLER-most expensive
This installer usually worked for a number of years for a big box retailer or large installation company doing installations and got tired of the corporate politics and decided to branch out on their own for greener pastures. These installers tend to do only a few jobs, may work by themselves or have a small crew, but may typically be on site for weeks or even months. Many of these installers are excellent, but they are not very efficient at basic home installations and tend to be very expensive. It may shock you, but many have average jobs that run from $50K to $500K. If you are an audio or video phile, these are the type of guys you should be looking for. Regardless, check to ensure they are CA state licensed contractors with a Bond on record and that they carry worker's compensation insurance for their employees, at least $2M in liability coverage. You should ask for proof of these with your quote.
  2. The HOBBY INSTALLER-most risky
This installer is someone who started out like the owner of Digitainment, but never bothered to get certified, licensed or insured. You pay much less for the hobby installer because he usually has another income source. They may also be less because they have no office, office support staff or even a separate work vehicle. The biggest reason they have much lower costs is because THEY PASS ON THE RISK TO YOU!  Installation errors, on-the-job injuries or accidental damage (like drilling through a sewer pipe) are all on your nickel.
  3. The BIG BOX INSTALLER-the most problems
This installer has the daunting task of trying to learn how to install every make and model of every type of AV equipment the store sells.  Take for example AV receivers.  There might be 7 brands (Yamaha, Onkyo, Pioneer, JVC, Denon, Sony, Sony ES).  Now take that and multiply that by at least 5 models in each brand, and you can start to see the problem.  How long does it take an installer to actually install each one of the 35 types of receivers even once, much less do it often enough to get good at it!  The result is set up errors that result in lower performance and/or increased complication.  By trying to be good at everything, the Big Box Installer is rarely good at anything.  Add to that the fact that the salesperson has usually never installed anything themselves and that they have not seen your home to determine optimum equipment type; it's no wonder that less than 20% of equipment they sell is actually installed by them.  By comparison, Digitainment installs 98.3% of all equipment we sell.

Authorized Resellers

It's also important to protect your investment into the equipment you are buying. Manufacturer's work hard to protect their "brand integrity" by requiring resellers to meet certain requirements that range from training, to minimum sales volume, to minimum advertised price and requiring clear disclosure of refurbished and/or used equipment, (commonly called "B" stock). Any one can go onto the internet and punch in a part number and find the lowest price. The only way to verify they are an authorized reseller is to log onto the manufacturer's website, go to their on-line retailers section and look for that company's name. Don't be shocked, but you'll rarely find them listed because THEY ARE NOT AUTHORIZED RESELLERS. Purchasing product from a non-authorized reseller invalidates most manufacturers' warranties regardless of what their website states (new in box-full manufacturer's warranty). If you don't find them there, and you aren't worried about having a product warranty, it's a good idea to see if they are a member of the Better Business Bureau in the area they are located.

Map Pricing PDF Print E-mail

It is important to understand the concept of MAP or Minimum Advertised Price because it is usually the easiest way to spot a Non-Authorized Reseller, especially on the internet. If you buy from a Non-Authorized Reseller most manufacturers' warranties are VOID. You cannot compare prices accurately unless you are comparing between Authorized Resellers. Otherwise you are comparing one company that provides a full warranty and one that does not.

Great Article on Minimum Advertised Pricing

Here's except from an internet article called "Discounters, Monitors Face Battle on Minimum Pricing" by Joseph Pereira that does a great job explaining MAP. The article itself is about how EBay and other on-line auction sellers want MAP eliminated because it handcuffs their ability to sell new equipment from Non-Authorized resellers.

Click here for the link or read on for the important parts, http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122835660256478297.html?mod=yhoofront

"Tiny firms like NetEnforcers Inc. -- with only 56 staffers jammed into a dim, spare cubicle farm here in Arizona -- wield economic power far beyond their size. These companies scour hundreds of thousands of Web sites daily, looking for retailers offering bargains below the "minimum advertised price," or MAP, set by manufacturers on an array of consumer goods.

When NetEnforcers finds goods like cameras, handbags or ovens for sale at too-low prices, as it claims to do 5,000 to 10,000 times a day, it alerts its clients, including Sony Corp., Black & Decker Corp., Cisco Systems Inc., JVC Kenwood Holdings Inc. and Samsung Inc.
For discounters, the consequences of not respecting MAP are usually speedy and decisive. If the seller is an authorized dealer of the product in question (which means it is bound to honor a MAP agreement), it gets a notice from the manufacturer or NetEnforcers and typically brings its price into line within hours, the company says.

In October, for instance, NetEnforcers found that discounter Buy.com Inc. and AceToolonline.com Inc. a seller of power tools, were offering goods at below the MAP. Both sites said they raised their prices to MAP levels.

If the seller isn't an authorized dealer -- for instance, a discounter that acquired the goods via a distributor -- NetEnforcers says other tactics are used to try to force a lowball price off the Internet. In these cases, they can allege that the discounter's use of the product's name or image constitutes trademark or copyright infringement, in an effort to force the seller to stop listing the discount.
Manufacturers have been racing to enforce minimum-pricing policies since last year, when the Supreme Court ruled them to be legal, and not a violation of antitrust law. EBay and a group of other retailers and antitrust advocates are meeting Thursday in Washington to craft a strategy to overturn that ruling.

Manufacturers say minimum-pricing requirements are good because they protect a brand's image from being tarnished by discounting, while helping retailers make enough profit to pay for customer service."

Manufacturers ultimately penalize the consumer by voiding manufacturer's warranties. We have had many frantic calls from "do-it-yourselfers" that saw the neighbors system we installed and decided they could buy the equipment for slightly less on the internet, unaware that "new in box, full factory warranty" listed on the website of the seller means nothing unless the manufacturer lists them as an authorized reseller or on-line reseller. We have nothing against "do-it-yourselfers", just make sure you buy from an authorized reseller or buy a separate product warranty (of course there goes the great price you got).

Internet Pricing--Beware PDF Print E-mail

If you're reading this article through your web browser, then you're probably aware of how useful the internet can be in researching just about any topic. There is a wealth of both opinionated and unbiased informance out there, just waiting for you to stumble on it. How did the word "google" become a household name? Because they do such a great job at indexing subject matter and suggesting the best, most intuitive search results to you.

Personally, in the realm of home audio and video, I consider the internet to be the perfect place for finding objective details about various products. For example, if you're comparing two different brands or models of television against each other, you can most likely dig up consistent metrics that are available for both (like "brightness", "contrast ratio", or "refresh rate").

However the internet is NOT as good for harvesting personal opinions about the home audio and video products that you're considering. When you read an author's online opinion, you rarely know where the statements are REALLY coming from. Is it a college kid who just bought their first TV? Are they just someone who likes talking to anyone who will listen? Has the same guy written reviews on everything from blenders to wool socks to toothpaste? When I mention things like the 400 plasma televisions DIGITAINMENT has installed over the years, or the variety of products we've researched and tested, I'm trying to do what the other internet sites can't...Make you feel comfortable in reading a qualified opinion. Just remember to take the abundance of subjective statements out there with a grain of salt. Rather than being victimized by the propogation of urban myths through internet lore, just schedule a consultation with us. We'll help you distinguish fact from fiction in designing your home theater dream.

The internet for is great for pricing research on non-warrantied items like consumables, but in the era of expensive electronic equipment and long term customer service, it can leave you regretting the "deal" you got.

Recently, I came across a great example of how a smart person could be easily tricked by online retailers. You can imagine the type of consumer we normally work with at DIGITAINMENT. They are usually an upper middle income home owner, with kids and they enjoy family time together.  You certainly wouldn't expect a customer to be "duped" off the internet, but it happens all the itme.  Imagine my surprise when a wary and inquisitive potential customer had reviewed the quote we gave her, compared it to the best internet pricing she could find, and called me back to tell me DID NOT have the lowest price.

I couldn't believe it. I mean, she found the same commercial grade plasma TV for hundreds of dollars less than the price I'd quoted. I was embarrassed and...well...more than a little confused as to how this company could afford to sell it below my cost. That same night, I spent some time checking out the web site she referred me to. I'm not going to mention the URL here, but I'd be happy to share it with you over the phone or in person. As you might guess, I found several important details that this internet retailer played down, or even omitted.

Hopefully you'll find it useful that I've listed those details here. Whether or not you're shopping with DIGITAINMENT, you should use this information to browse the web with a more discerning eye, and make a more educated and confident home theater investment.
